We moved to Bonanza, home of the Neptune Goldmine Company, also run by North Americans. Every fifteen days they took out the gold bars, the company took our wealth and left us with sick miners whose lungs were destroyed by tuberculosis and silicosis. They paid only enough to keep people from dying. Most of the people were Miskitos; they were forgotten people without medical care, ignored by the US government. To them, the Miskitos were like animals. In Bonanza my sons were imprisoned at a very early age. The poor conditions in the town led them to join the revolution.
