Bay Area Now 9 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

October 6, 2023 - May 5, 2024
San Francisco, CA

Eight diptychs from South of Market, 1978-1986 and SoMa Now, 2010-2022 are on view throughout the Bay Area Now 9 exhibit at YBCA.

As I was putting together the South of Market book in the early 2010s I returned to this neighborhood – rechristened SoMa by millennial marketers – and have been documenting its latest rebirth ever since. In this new world I often feel as if I am standing in two places at once: the past infuses the present with both longing and confusion. And so, while the two projects stand alone, this show offers an opportunity to lean into the resonance (and dissonance) between them by placing these images side by side.

Photos from Treasure Island displayed on kiosks throughout San Francisco

Treasure Island Photo Documentation Project | SF Art Commission

For the last year and a half I have been photographing Treasure Island as part of an effort to document its changing landscape amidst a two-decade transformation into "San Francisco's newest neighborhood." You can read more about this commission, the other artists involved, and what's in store for Treasure Island, here.

A selection of these photographs, along with those from four other photographers, are on display on kiosks throughout San Francisco through December 2023.
